AVX can discuss electrical requirements alongside your kitchen, bathroom or property renovation. Use the guide below to describe your project, including any inspection or specialist installation you are considering. Availability, the responsible suitably qualified electrical contractor and the exact scope are confirmed before a booking is accepted.

Sockets, switches and power points

Mark the location and quantity of the points you want, including switches beside doors, desk sockets and appliance connections. State whether you are replacing an existing fitting, moving it or adding a new position. These are different jobs and should be priced separately.

Choose the finish and give model references for USB outlets, dimmers or other accessories. Ask the electrician to assess the existing arrangement before assuming a new point can be added to it.

Lighting and controls

Describe what you want each part of the room to do: worktop lighting, general illumination, a dining pendant or a reading corner. Show the furniture plan and tell us which lights you want to operate together.

Include the fittings, controls and any supplied drivers in the specification. Agree who checks compatibility and who supplies each component. A decorative fitting alone may not describe everything required for its installation.

Inspection and EICR enquiries

If you need the condition of the existing installation assessed, tell us why: a rental requirement, property purchase, renovation decision or a specific concern. Send the previous report if you have it and identify any outstanding recommendations.

An inspection quotation should define the property and circuits covered, access arrangements, limitations and the report to be provided. Any subsequent corrective work needs its own agreed scope.

Consumer unit and rewiring enquiries

Send an external photograph of the closed consumer unit, the approximate property size and a room-by-room brief. Tell us whether the enquiry concerns the board itself, selected circuits or a wider refurbishment.

Ask for inspection findings and the proposed work to be explained before choosing an upgrade. Agree cable routes, point quantities, disruption, finishing and the handover documents in the quotation.

Fault investigation

Describe what stopped working, when the issue started and which rooms are affected. Include any recent building work or water damage. Photographs can support the enquiry, but they cannot establish the cause or confirm safety.

Agree the initial investigation charge, time allowance and what happens if more investigation or repair is needed. A diagnosis charge should not be mistaken for a complete repair price. This form is for planned enquiries, not emergency dispatch.

EV charging and other specialist plans

Thinking about charging at home or another substantial new electrical load? Include the equipment model, parking arrangement, ownership or permission details and photographs of the proposed location.

We can review the enquiry and confirm whether a suitable specialist is available. Feasibility, supply arrangements, installation scope and any required permissions must be assessed before a price or installation date is agreed.

These figures provide an initial budgeting guide. Your quotation will confirm the work, inclusions and total payable for your property.

VAT and scope: the source does not clearly specify the tax basis or a complete specification for each range. Do not assume VAT, materials, repairs or decoration are included. AVX’s written quotation must state the work, exclusions and total payable including any applicable VAT. Complex London projects can exceed these figures.

For example, an accessible replacement in the same position cannot be compared directly with a concealed installation across several finished rooms. When comparing estimates, use the same point schedule and ask each contractor to show the same inclusions. A low starting figure is useful only when you know precisely what it buys.

Typical daily labour rates.

Use these published reference ranges to understand the labour element of a quotation. They are indicative rates per specialist per day, not fixed AVX booking prices or the total cost of a finished project.

These daily rates are indicative planning allowances for individual trades. They are not fixed AVX tariffs or a complete project price. Confirm the scope, number of days, materials and applicable VAT in your written quotation.

VAT and inclusions: the source does not clearly state the VAT basis of its day-rate table. Confirm tax before comparing these figures with a VAT-inclusive quotation. Materials, products, waste, parking, specialist equipment and additional visits need their own stated inclusions. Agree the hours covered by a working day, team size and any minimum attendance charge before booking.

Pay for the agreed scope

A fixed project price can cover several trades and stages. Ask which work is included, which items you supply, and how extra work is approved. An hourly visit, short job or emergency attendance may use a different charging basis from a full planned day.

Avoid counting labour twice

These rates help explain the labour already allowed for in a full quotation. They are not an extra charge added to the project budget. Count each specialist’s actual attendance separately; a three-week programme does not mean every specialist works for three full weeks.

Electrical enquiries: identify fault investigation, installation, testing, documentation and making good separately. A day-rate comparison does not replace a quotation for the specific electrical work required.

An estimate is a starting point

A provisional figure based on photographs can help you decide whether to arrange a visit. It should explain its assumptions. Ask which information is still missing and which parts of the price can change after inspection.

A written scope controls changes

Keep the drawing, fittings list and quotation together. If you change a position or add another item, ask for its cost and effect on timing before approving it. Confirm who can authorise changes when several people are involved.

Plan around your renovation

The room layout comes first.

Kitchen renovation

Provide the final cabinet layout and exact appliance references before positions are agreed. Identify the hob, ovens, fridge, dishwasher, washing machine, extractor and any boiling-water tap or other powered accessory.

Mark worktop sockets, island power and lighting controls on the same plan. Agree access to connections once cabinets are fitted. Changes after the walls and units are finished can require additional visits and renewed finishing work. Explore our kitchen planning guide.

Bathroom and shower room

List the fan, lights, mirror, heating and any powered shower or controls. Supply the exact product models and the final room arrangement so the electrician can assess suitability and positioning.

Coordinate electrical preparation with the waterproofing, tiling and ceiling work. Decide who supplies each item and who finishes any disturbed surfaces. See our bathroom renovation guide.

Occupied homes and home offices

Tell us which rooms must remain accessible and whether anyone depends on powered equipment. Agree the planned interruptions and alternative arrangements before the visit. Do not assume electricity will remain available throughout the work.

Identify desks, internet equipment, furniture and stored belongings on the access plan. Discuss where materials can be kept and how the work area is separated from normal household use.

Flats and managed buildings

Ask the managing agent or freeholder for the conditions relevant to your proposed work. Share access hours, lift arrangements, parking restrictions and any requirements affecting shared areas.

Confirm the location of your own consumer unit and whether access to other areas must be arranged. Work inside a flat and work on communal systems need clearly separate responsibilities.

Consumer units and wider upgrades

Define the complete installation.

A useful rewiring quotation describes a finished arrangement, not simply a number of bedrooms. Prepare one list for every room and mark the proposed sockets, lights, switches and fixed appliances. Include spaces that can be overlooked, such as hallways, cupboards and external areas.

Retained or replaced

Ask which parts of the existing installation the specialist proposes to retain, investigate or replace, and why. Record the basis for the recommendation. The age or appearance of a house alone does not define the work you should buy.

Cable routes and access

Discuss the proposed routes and which surfaces may be opened. Identify fitted wardrobes, tiled areas, floor coverings and furniture that affect access. Agree who moves or protects items and who reinstates the finishes.

First fix and second fix

Use the programme to distinguish preparation and wiring from later fitting of accessories. Agree the inspections and decisions needed before finishes close the work. Keep the point schedule available to all trades.

Room-by-room completion

Record what completion means for each room: installed items, testing, documents, repaired surfaces and any decoration. If the project is staged, identify what is usable after each agreed stage and what remains outstanding.

Access and timescales

Understand the disruption before work starts.

These are AVX planning allowances for discussing access, not guaranteed booking durations. The electrician must confirm the programme after assessing the actual job. Product lead times, permissions and decoration are separate from electrical attendance.

Before booking, agree the start date, daily access window and likely interruptions. Tell the contractor about deliveries and other trades already booked. Ask which decisions or products must be ready before each visit so that an avoidable return visit does not become an extra cost.

Inspection, testing and handover

Keep the right paperwork.

Agree who will inspect, test and provide the relevant records. The document depends on the work: an Electrical Installation Certificate records installation work; a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate may apply to qualifying smaller alterations. An EICR reports on the condition of an existing installation. Building Regulations compliance documentation is a separate matter where required.

When is notification relevant?

In England, new circuits, replacement consumer units and additions or alterations within defined special locations are notifiable. A kitchen is not automatically a special location for this purpose. Non-notifiable work still needs to meet the applicable safety requirements. Confirm the compliance route before work begins.

Official reference: Approved Document P for England. The responsible electrical specialist should explain the requirements for your particular job.

At handover, ask for a clear list of the records supplied and anything still outstanding. Check the property address, the described scope and the contractor details. Keep reports, product instructions and agreed aftercare terms in one place, together with the final quotation and approved changes.

Landlords and property managers

Plan inspection and follow-up together.

For rented homes in England covered by the electrical safety regulations, installations must be inspected and tested by a qualified person at least every five years, or sooner when the report requires it. Landlords must provide the required records and address findings within the applicable deadlines.

For an enquiry, send the existing report, the property type, the number of circuits if known and the access contact. State any deadline and whether tenants need advance arrangements. Agree the inspection scope and report delivery before booking; any required remedial work should be clearly identified and separately authorised.

If a report contains observations you do not understand, ask the inspecting electrician to explain the priority, the recommended action and any further investigation. Keep the original report with the records of subsequent work. A repair invoice by itself may not answer every question raised in the inspection.

Useful photographs and plans

Show the room, the proposed locations and the outside of the closed consumer unit. Add an existing report or a simple marked plan. Do not remove electrical covers or expose wiring to take photographs.

Files you can send

The form accepts up to five files: JPG, PNG, WEBP or PDF up to 10 MB each; MP4 or MOV up to 100 MB each; 200 MB in total. Short clips showing the layout and access are usually more useful than a long recording.

Before the site visit

Confirm the full address and access arrangements once a visit is agreed. Have any existing reports and product references ready. Tell us about building restrictions, occupied rooms and coordination with your other renovation work.

After reviewing the information, we can identify the next step: clarification, an assessment by the appropriate specialist or a defined quotation. Sending the form does not book attendance or authorise work. The proposed service, price and timing must be agreed first.

Answers before you book.

Are these your fixed electrical prices?

No. The cost table contains attributed UK reference ranges with an unspecified tax basis. Your AVX quotation will describe the actual scope and total payable. A photograph-based estimate remains provisional until the necessary assessment is complete.

Can I request a small job?

Yes, describe the exact item and location. State whether it is a replacement or a new position. Confirm the minimum attendance charge and any investigation, materials or finishing separately before booking.

Is a day rate the same as the total job cost?

No. It describes the agreed labour allowance for one specialist. Products, additional visits and other exclusions can change the total. Labour already included in a fixed quotation is not added again from the day-rate table.

Does fault finding include the repair?

Only if the agreed scope says so. Ask what the initial investigation covers and when a further price will be provided. Additional repair work should be authorised before it proceeds.

Will a photograph be enough for a final quotation?

It may help with initial planning, but it cannot establish the condition of concealed work or replace necessary checks. The specialist will identify what needs to be assessed before confirming a scope and price.

Should I book an EICR or ask for a rewire?

Tell us your concern and provide any existing report. An assessment can help define the appropriate next step. Do not assume a whole-property rewire is necessary simply because the building is old.

Does changing a consumer unit include rewiring?

Not automatically. These are distinct scopes. Ask the quotation to specify the board work, any existing issues to resolve, testing, documents and the separate extent of circuit replacement, if proposed.

Can I choose my own switches and lights?

Yes, include model references and quantities in your brief. Agree suitability checks, supply responsibilities and what happens if products arrive incomplete or need replacing. Keep the chosen finishes on the approved schedule.

Can you coordinate with my new kitchen?

Include the cabinet layout, appliance list and planned fitting dates. Electrical preparation and later fitting need to align with the wider programme. Confirm the final positions before the relevant finishes and units are installed.

What about bathroom lights and extractor fans?

Send the room layout and exact product details. The electrical specialist must assess their suitability and proposed positions. Coordinate the work with ceiling finishes, waterproofing and tiling.

Will walls be repaired and painted afterwards?

Only to the level included in the agreed scope. Ask whether the price covers local patch repairs, plastering, preparation and repainting, and whether decoration is local or extends across a whole surface.

Can I stay at home while work takes place?

Discuss the specific programme before booking. Agree access, planned interruptions and which areas remain usable. Tell the contractor about any household dependency on power so suitable arrangements can be made.

How long will my electricity be off?

There is no single answer for every job. Ask the electrician for the expected interruption during the agreed scope and how changes will be communicated. Do not plan essential activities on the assumption of uninterrupted power.

Is electrical work available as an emergency service?

This assessment form is for planned enquiries and is not monitored as an emergency dispatch service. It does not promise immediate attendance. If there is immediate danger, use the appropriate emergency service rather than waiting for a form response.

Can I enquire about an EV charger?

Yes, provide the proposed location, parking arrangement and equipment details. A suitable specialist, feasibility and full scope must be confirmed before a booking is accepted. An indicative charger figure is not a guaranteed installed price.

Who will carry out and sign off the work?

The proposed suitably qualified electrical contractor and the responsibilities for inspection, testing and relevant documentation will be confirmed before booking. Ask for the credentials applicable to your project.

What happens if more work is needed?

Ask for the finding, proposed work, cost and timing to be recorded. Approve any additional scope before it proceeds. Keep that agreement with the original quotation so the final bill can be checked.

Do I have to provide my full address straight away?

The initial form asks for a postcode so the enquiry can be reviewed. You can add the full address immediately or confirm it before a site visit. Access details and building restrictions are also useful at that stage.

Can I attach an existing electrical report?

Yes, upload a PDF within the stated file limit and describe the reason for your enquiry. Include the relevant pages and outstanding findings so the proposed next step can be assessed.

What should I keep after the job?

Keep the written scope, approved changes, invoice, agreed electrical records, product instructions and aftercare terms. Record any outstanding items and the agreed route for resolving them at handover.
